Assistant Director for the Center for Community Health and Development·University of Kansas
Christina serves as Assistant Director of the Center for Community Health and Development at the University of Kansas. She directs the Community Tool Box and specializes in capacity building for community change and improvement and supporting evaluation of community-based efforts. Christina has served as a speaker and technical consultant for groups including the World Health Organization, World Bank, United Nations, Peace Corps, and the Institute of Medicine. As a volunteer, Christina worked with a local coalition for more than a decade in various roles, including as Coalition Chair and supporting the Healthy Food for All work group. Christina provides trainings to non-profits, coalitions, and those implementing collaborative community-based efforts. Her passion is helping people make a difference on socially important issues.

When an elevator is installed, no one asks why the elevator is needed or how to use it. In comparison, when an assistive listening system (ALS) is installed, almost everyone will say “Huh?”
In this session, you’ll learn that even when people wear hearing aids, they still need assistive listening systems to hear clearly in public and private entities. The session will cover which systems fall under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the ADA standards, the practicality of the different ALS, and best practices for managers so that users have a positive experience, whether they wear hearing devices or not. Also, the session will cover how Auracast may be used as an assistive listening system with International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards to be released in 2027. For years to come, all assistive listening systems will coexist for users to access clear speech anywhere they go.
Individuals will be able to submit questions for the speaker in advance during the registration process.
Sign Language Interpreters and Human Generated Real-Time Captioning will be provided for this session.

Presenters

Andrew Houtenville, PhD, is a Professor of Economics and Research Director of the Institute on Disability at the University of New Hampshire. Dr. Houtenville is extensively involved in disability statistics and employment policy research. He has published widely in the areas of disability statistics and the economic status of people with disabilities. He is the Principal Investigator on the NIDILRR-funded Employment Policy and Measurement Rehabilitation and Research Training Center. Dr. Houtenville received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of New Hampshire in 1999 & was a National Institute on Aging Post-Doctoral Fellow at Syracuse University in 1998/1999.

John O’Neill, PhD is the director of employment and disability research at Kessler Foundation and has over 28 years of experience in vocational rehabilitation as a rehabilitation counselor educator, disability employment researcher, and advisor to state vocational rehabilitation agencies. Dr. O’Neill has been a PI or co-PI on six NIDILRR funded, five-year research and training centers focusing on TBI and community integration, disability statistics, disability employment service system, and how individual and contextual factors relate to employment outcomes among people with disabilities.

Elaine E. Katz, MS, CCC-SLP is Senior Vice President of Grants and Communications at Kessler Foundation. Elaine Katz oversees the Foundation’s comprehensive grantmaking program and its communications department. During her tenure, the Foundation has awarded more than $49 million in grant support for national and community-based employment programs. For more than 25 years, Elaine has worked with non-profit organizations in the areas of board development, fundraising, marketing, and business development. Elaine often speaks about innovative practices for employing people with disabilities, authors/co-authors articles and papers on related topics, and is a member of several aligned organizations.

Denise M. Rozell, JD is the Director of Policy Innovation at the AUCD. Prior to joining AUCD, she spent fifteen years as Assistant Vice President for State Government Relations with Easter Seals. Denise was the primary resource to Easter Seals 75 affiliates in building capacity to increase awareness of and support for Easter Seals in state government. Prior to that, Denise was the Executive Director of the Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired, an international membership organization for the professionals serving individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Denise holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Occidental College in Los Angeles and a juris doctorate from Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California in Berkeley.

Access to financial literacy education/services is vital to the overall well-being of jobseekers and employees of all kinds, including people with disabilities. Yet, financial education is often not made available when offering employment services. April is Financial Literacy Month. Join this interactive webinar to learn how workforce systems are effectively integrating financial education into their service delivery. During this presentation, the National Association of Workforce Development Professionals (NAWDP) will share findings from a recent study on the financial service needs of the workforce system. Workforce professionals will explain how they support jobseekers with disabilities through financial education. Webinar participants will also learn how the Secure Your Financial Future: A Toolkit for Individuals with Disabilities provides jobseekers and workforce professionals with resources, tools, and financial engagement approaches to benefit everyone, regardless of where they are in their work life cycle. Finally, an individual with a disability will describe how they benefitted from employment and financial education services within the workforce system, which resulted in a successful transition off of public benefits.
